Customer save programs must swing into action before a customer closes their relationship with you. In general they must be extremely responsive and enact action before the customer leaves otherwise the chances of success are quite low.
In a consumer setting save program can be very effective when customers who call into a call centre are identified as likely to leave or want to close their relationship are forwarded immediately to a dedicated, specially skilled, save team.
